The 1st Cebu Art Book Fair has successfully showcased the many colorful printed pages of stories in Cebu and the world. Thousands of people visited The Crossroads on July 2 and 3 to see the exhibits, learn from the workshops, and further explore parts of their creative selves.

The art book fair’s theme revolved around a poster show called “Estoryang Binotbot,” which is a Bisaya phrase often used in pertaining to exaggerated and mythical stories. The theme was interpreted by local creatives using illustration, collage, photography, and poetry.

Numerous interesting activities were lined up during the two-day event graced by around 100 illustrators, designers, writers, and poets.

“We were so excited to witness the warm response of artists and the public to this undertaking.  Staging the country’s 1st art book fair is a feat in itself.  But more importantly, artists were again given a venue to network and show their work to the world.  At the same time, this gave people a fun and engaging way to enjoy art,” said Mark Deutsch of Happy Garaje.

Palanca awardee Larry Ypil and Society of Illustrators Gold Awardee Happy Garaje gave a sneak peek into their creative processes and led the audience through a generative exercise to explore the writer in the designer and the designer in the writer. “We live in a world where text and image come hand-in-hand. The workshop is a chance to talk about that. What does it mean to write with photographs or video and what does it also mean for designers to think about their work as writing,” said Larry Ypil.

Attendees also learned to get in touch with themselves through a step-by-step guide on gaining more confidence.  Artist Andre Chan talked about the processes and structures of walking a path to self-knowledge to build a foundation from which people can express themselves with eloquence through art-making.

Artist Speaker Clara Cayosa, an independent graphic designer specializing in brand identities and custom typefaces, shared ways of ‘Expanding the Circle” of opportunity and prosperity in their chosen artistic fields.

Moreover, participants got to check out Discarded: an Art Trading Card exhibit by Cebuano artists and curated by Siamese Rat, an exhibition of art books, zines, chapbooks, poetry, stickers, and other printed art. Entertainment in the form of a live podcast recording by Retasocast and a not-so-secret show from pop bands Mandaue Nights, Sepia Times, Manic Mundane, and KRNA was also enjoyed by event attendees.
